Wowhead Acquired by Affinity Media
Wowhead CEO Tim Sullivan recently announced that the site had been acquired by Affinity Media, the parent of the ZAM Network. Affinity is now in control of Thottbot, Allakhazam, and now Wowhead, making it essentially the News Corp of WoW.
More shocking than Affinity's hegemonic control of WoW media outlets, however, is the fact that Wowhead was purportedly purchased for id="blog_post" million. A quick look at the Alexa rankings shows that Wowhead is performing neck-and-neck with Allakhazam, as both sites trail somewhat behind Thottbot.
My question is why Wowhead would sell-out for such a small sum? In my analysis, it is apparent that the proliferation of Wowhead is vast, with nearly every WoW user questioned being a consistent user of the service. Given the fact that its performance is practically identical to Allakhazam, the valuation of Wowhead is clearly higher.
The logical conclusion is that Wowhead jumped for money too quickly and sold itself short the instant it was tantalized by a six-figure deal. It is unclear what effect its new corporate overload will have on the service, but the site's dubious price point leaves me with little faith in its management.
