Myst Online dies again. 7 more lives to go.

POSTED BY Nemo, 05 February 2008

Announced yesterday by the VP of Content and Creative Director for GameTap, Rrrrrricardo Sanchezzzzz, Myst/Uru Online will discontinue it’s service on Gametap. This marks the second time that an online version of Myst has come to an untimely end. The first attempt ended while still in open beta in 2004 and now this one ended just a little over a year after the game was declared live.

The biggest source of anger from the players when news is heard of an MMO cancellation comes from the guys that just paid for their next subscription term. Specially the people that paid for a long term subscription plan just when the cancellation is announced. With Myst this is also turns out to be the case but the unique problem here is that there were signs and rumors that the game might be cancelled for the last two months but there was no official word made when it sort of seemed clear that the end was coming. This led some players to believe that Gametap just waited for a first set of yearly subscriptions to re-up before telling players the news, the players feel that Gametap just cheated them out of the money when they fully knew that this game wasn’t going to continue.

Another problem is that people also think that this was the Gametap plan from the very beginning. The first year of content for Myst Uru Live…. Online ( what is the game really called? ) was basically all the material seen in the recent expansions that was just adjusted for multiplay, so basically Gametap tricked fans into buying Myst:The Gametap Edition. There wasn’t really a plan to continue on after all the previous content was adjusted for internet play. Whatever the reason Myst Online: Uru live is dead, again.

Myst Online will be live for the next 60 days so people can say their goodbyes and the like.
