What's up with all these awards for unfinished games?
One thing that really bothers me about MMO sites now is the apparent requirement to list all the "awards" they receive for their games that are not anywhere near the finishing stages, i mean some of these awards are received years before having anything that can even be called a game. Isn't that weird? When we get any sort of info for these games from their site own sites they splash all over the place "Unfinished product, early alpha version of game, this isn't even going to be in game but we are going to show it cause it looks cool." We get warned about how all this stuff we are seeing is most likely not anything that will end up in the game but it's good enough for receiving awards?
Now i know all these video game mags, site, conventions get to see way more than what the public is shown but still! they are MMOs, these games can totally change their gameplay mechanics when they go live from month to month if they want to. How can they say, " This game has the best X, Y, Z." Months or even years from release? Well now that I'm that I'm thinking about it I guess its more the fault of all these video game mags, websites, conventions, etc, etc. Those guys are trying to sell their games so if some mag gives you an award for best horse in a video game... why not tell the people what this magazine thought about their video game horse?
In conclusion (this feels like a highschool paper)... In conclusion, more than half of these awards given to MMOs that aren't out do really mean absolutely nothing. Best pvp experience for an MMO in the alpha stage, and even beta, in reality stands for what exactly? From the alpha to the live version of the game an MMO can have such drastic changes that what was seen and judged at the point the award was given is probably the only place that, that footage, demo, etc, will ever be seen. All these awards do is mess up the cover art of my game as all these companies put the award logos all over the game boxes to draw people in. And just because you have a website that reviews and previews games it doesn't that you can make up your own awards.
