Worgen spelled backwards...

OK, I found a post in the WoW General board with that as the title and ... It's pretty funny (the post isn't there anymore so don’t look), I mean, it's not just what it spells, but when you get deeper into it, when you look a bit further in, it builds up into something pretty classic.

So Worgen are from another world, "a dark place, a place of nightmare. If that world fosters locations safe from the cursed Worgen, then my research has revealed no such bastions. And if one considers the ferocity and wickedness of the Worgen, it is likely that no such bastions exist. It is surmised that the Worgen are content to remain on their world … And for this, we are fortunate," according to the Book of Ur from the game.

Now these similarities are purely coincidental since stories with concepts that mirror this have been told on many occasions right? Right.

Anyway the real point of this extensive introduction is to discuss Blizzard's, now classic, censoring … activities. A quick example is the Frozen Throne's Undead flying unit the Black Sphinx. That unit had its name changed to … Destroyer for unknown reasons. Normally, something like this means nothing but as time passes and we see this happen again, and again, and again, you have to think something is up.

We travel now to the World of Warcraft and visit one of the few occurrences of this in the game. I think the most-known name change in the game so far has to be the Maine Coon; the Maine Coon was (is) a non-combat pet in the game that was a pretty rare item to get, so it, of course, became popular among collectors. What made it rare was that it dropped from three different mobs at a very low rate, 1 percent apparently, that were friendly to the Alliance, this meant that only the Horde could attack them, and one other severely rare mob found in a low-level zone that no one frequents. No one really goes out of their way to explore to hunt for rare mobs in Silverpine Forest.

But for the few entrepreneurs that hunted, got and wanted to sell this pet, it became sort of a … funny situation when they came to town to sell the item. Because of the game's profanity filter, what people saw when the item was advertised in general chat was "Maine $%#@ for sale." The word "Coon" was edited out, because it was used as a derogatory term at one point. Eventually, either someone made a complaint or a lawyer made suggestion after WOW got 4 million subscribers, that this should taken down to be on the safe side. And it was changed. I don’t know the reason why, but the change basically killed the reason for having the cat. Mainly, because the name went from an actual breed of cat, like all the other cats in the game, to the name of a color pattern ALL cat breeds can have.

Black Tabby is not a breed of cat, black tabby just means that there is a cat with a dark-colored stripped pattern.

In the end, of all of this who comes up being the actual losers? We the players of course, why? Because the company is basically being held hostage when they don’t stand up for the game they created and that trickles down to the people that are paying for it and playing it. How in all that is holy when the incident with the Maine Coon happened didn’t the person in charge of naming the cats just loaded Wikipedia and showed the entry on the Maine Coon to answer the problem I… I don’t know. All he needed to do is point at the screen.

Come on Blizz! its the name of an actual cat, what’s really the problem? If this was going to actually turn into anything it would most likely end up being more press for you people and for the game. Anyone actually trying to bring this up as anything would only end up looking real dumb.

And back to the idea brought up in the first paragraph; now that this little bit of info about the Worgen has been brought up would Blizzard change their names if enough complains were made about it? I had an idea some time ago about picking a random thing with a name that might have something that might be slightly offensive if viewed a certain way then getting a bunch of friends to complain about it to see if we could get the name changed. If it was changed we would laugh about it and reveal ourselves to show the true purpose of the plan. Just to show how easy companies can be swayed to do things if you complain the right way.

Anyway Blizz, Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don't give up the fight!

Hmmm, this brings up something else to mind.
